Lord Ayyappan, or Ayyappa, is a popular Hindu god. Ayyappa is the son of Lord Shiva and Mohini. Ayyappa is also called 'Hariharan Puthran' or 'Hariharaputra,' which actually implies the child of both 'Hari' or Vishnu and 'Haran' or Shiva. Lord Ayyappa in the Puranas or ancient scriptures is intriguing. After Goddess Durga killed the demon king Mahishasur, his sister, Mahishi, set out to avenge her brother. To spare the world from obliteration, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Mohini, and marry Lord Shiva, and of their union was conceived Lord Ayyappa. First, the devotees would have to observe a 41-day penance before embarking on the temple pilgrimage. In addition, the devotees need to walk miles by walking, bathe in the blessed waterway Pampa, lastly, overcome the precarious move of 18 stairs to come to the Sabarimala Temple.
